Quick Wins for Velo-City Dublin

The data collected with the Liberty Bell platform was collected by volunteer participants during the latter part of 2017 as part of the Smart Cycling Challenge run by Smart Dublin and Enterprise Ireland. Additional points were collected in 2019 specifically for the routes identified for VC19.

  • When participants encountered issues while cycling - both positive and negative - they rang their smart bicycle bell and the location and timestamp was automatically recorded.

  • Subsequently the participants categorised the issue by a number of pre-defined categories and described the issue in their own words.

  • Categorisation was subjective and no specific instructions were given to participants as to how to categorise an issue . For example - an issue felt subjectively to being caused by another road user, may in fact be influenced by the infrastructure.

Taking on board a wider range of experiences by diverse people can give richer insights into the experience of cycling in Dublin and identify issues that act as barriers to different people cycling safely and comfortably.

Some Selected Issues

Negative

Cars blocking the cycle lane on Eden Quay. The poor design of this section of cycle lane means that car drivers block it while waiting for the traffic signals.

Vehicle Parking in Lane
Involving: Car Driver

Positive

Yeeeah Samuel Beckett Bridge ! Always fun to go over & get look up & down the Liffey. Could have far more space for cycling & pedestrians though. Some traffic lanes could be repurposed completely for cycling only leave sides for pedestrians

Pleasant Environment

Negative

The bicycle lane on this stretch or east wall road is in a very bad state of disrepair forcing cyclists to stay on the road rather than use it, this is a very busy road with many large HGV go into and from the port

Poor Road Surface

Negative

Can be ve dangerous coming out of cylce lane on college gree if you want to continue on and turn right onto Fleet street, becaause you have to cross a lane of traffic that is mostly buses, sometimes taxis/delivery vans

Busy or Speeding Traffic, Poor Road Layout, Poor Road Markings

Positive

Bike lane is excellent here... but could be improved by changing the level adjoining with the footparth

Clear Road Markings and Signage
Involving: Cyclist

Negative

Need for a ramp onto the bike line directly opposite Castle Avenue to get cyclists off the Bus lane ASAP

Involving: Cyclist, Bus Driver, Taxi Driver
